Lowering Your Homeowners Insurance

The Value of a Wind Mitigation Inspection

Chris Collins, Realtor with ERA American Realty, and new homeowners with storm insurance savings How would you like to shave hundreds of dollars off your home’s storm insurance policy premium? Local Emerald Coast residents have saved thousands by having their home examined by a licensed contractor. By Florida law (Statute 627.0629) insurance companies have to offer homeowners discounts or credits for construction techniques that help reduce wind damage from storms. For more information or order an inspection, go to > My Safe Home Depending on your home’s condition, windstorm premiums can be reduced quite a bit with this inspection. Things your inspector will look at are
  • The date of your roof’s installation and type of covering (asphalt shingles, metal, tile, etc.)
  • The type of subsurface/decking below the roof
  • The type of fastening and method used to secure the decking to your trusses
  • How your trusses are attached to your walls (hurricane clips & anchors)
  • The shape of your roof:  gable, hip, shed or flat. If your roof is gable, the type of bracing used on the end walls
  • The presence of a secondary moisture resistance barrier in the wall/roof construction
  • The presence of storm shutters or some means of protecting window openings
If you have already had a wind mitigation inspection done, remember to mark your calendar. Wind mitigation inspections are only good for five years. If you are planning to buy a residence in Northwest Florida, you will want to keep these things in mind when selecting your new home. Your real estate professional can help you with understanding the various mortgage and insurance company requirements that will affect your home ownership budget for years.
